The Perfect Soldier and the God of Death

a.b.o.u.t t.h.e r.e.c.s
There's an incredible amount of GW fanfiction on the web, spread out over various websites, including (but not limited to) ff.net, kikotei.net, 1x2x1.org, gwaddiction.com and many smaller, but terrific, archives. I can't possibly rec every great story in the fandom, as much as I would like to :).

b.i.a.s.e.s
What do I look for? Well, first off, I'm strictly 1x2x1 and don't read either Heero or Duo with anyone else. Yes, that means no Relena, no Hilde, and no pairing them up with any of the other pilots. Most, if not all, of the 1x2x1 stories rec'd here will have 3x4x3 as background material. Even though I genuinely like Trowa and Quatre together, they don't manage to grab me quite the way Heero and Duo do.

That said, I don't do feminization. Both Heero and Duo are male, they're boys (teenage ones, even!), and I want the fanfiction to reflect that. Duo isn't a wimp -- they don't let spineless cowards fly lethal killing machines, do they? I don't care who the dominant partner is in the relationship -- in my mind, they're equal and I'm not going to be fussy over the seme/uke aspects of a story.

I'm all about Heero Yuy. Unapologetically. He's my favorite character. The way he's portrayed can make or break a story to me. I love Duo a lot as well (he's only this far behind Heero), but Heero is just... yeah. *nods*

Unless otherwise noted, all stories here will be 1x2x1-centered. The only things I warn for are death, rape, permanent disability and non-traditional pairings (since I don't care for them at all), but as of now, none of the rec'd stories contain one or more of these elements. If some of the terms confuse you, please check out the glossary. Right then! On to the stories!

Note: There's no direct linking to stories archived at GWA. Instead, there's a link to GWA's frontpage; from there on, you'll have to click fanfiction --> author's name --> stories are sorted alphabetically.

Snow, by Kitsune
Short and sappy and lovely. But not too sappy, despite the extreme "sap" warning at the beginning of the fic -- no, the sap quotient is just right ^_^. Consider this a pick-me-up for those shitty days where nothing seems to be going right.

Best Christmas Ever, by Sunhawk
Sunhawk is an author who is very hit-and-miss with me. I have started reading the "Ion Series" and the "Road Trip" arc, but I've never actually finished them. "Best Christmas Ever", however, struck a chord in me. The story deals with the theme of suicide in a way that doesn't make me run screaming for the hills, like many other (badly-written) suicide-themed stories do. It's as if I can almost feel Duo's emotions in this story, and it makes it all the more powerful. Summary: Heero salvages Duo's Christmas.

Pretty in Pink, by Lady M
This definitely falls in the "why didn't I rec this story earlier?" category. The thing is, I thought I had rec'd it already and just kept overlooking it. Turns out, I hadn't >.<. Anyway, "Pretty in Pink" is the kind of story that's just truly, genuinely funny without being stupid. Humor is extremely hard to pull off, so you can bet I treasure it when an honest-to-God, laugh-out-loud funny story comes along. Like this one. Simply put: Heero has a mission. It goes wrong. Really wrong. Duo is there to help him out a little, in his own unique way. (Nope, there is no cross-dressing, despite the title.)

Comfortable, by Sailor Seraphim
(ff.net link, often down) Sweet and fluffly without being overly sappy. I like Duo's voice in this fic -- it's hard to get him (and Heero as well) right, but it definitely sounds like the Duo we known from canon. Well-written, smoothly flowing sentences and genuinely touching moments. It's Duo's birthday. Heero surprises him.

Loaded, by Hitori
Sex chockful with characterization. It's not often that stories like these come along. Posted just a couple of days ago on 1x2ML (I think. Could've been DHML or HDML or even GWfan), "Loaded" is a dark story that I started reading despite the fact I tend to shy away from dark (usually because "dark" means torture and I can't really handle that). The basic plot? Duo has a mission and then hot sex with Heero. This is really a too simple word to describe this story -- there's a wealth of truly amazing characterization in every phrase, every sentence, ever look that they share. And the ending -- oh, man, the ending. So. fucking. good. Not a fluffy story, but hey, nobody dies, gets maimed or raped, so consider this is an order to read it.

My Dads, by Marika
Ah, kidfic. The bane of my existence. So rarely done well -- but when it's done well, it's usually done extremely well. This is very much the case with "My Dads", a story focusing on Heero and Duo's adoptive daughter, Julia. Let me tell/warn you in advance that the story is from her POV and that the focus on pretty much on her, and the startling discoveries she makes. Starting with the fact she has no idea her fathers are the (in)famous Gundam pilots, this story takes the reader on a kick-ass journey in which Julia uncovers more of her past than she probably wanted to know. I can't say much more without giving away everything, but I loved it and I normally despise offspring fic. Outside POVs on my favorite couples are always interesting to meet, and the whole Heero/Duo romantic relationship is portrayed wonderfully. This Heero and Duo are slightly older, but nonetheless realistic extrapolations from their canon fifteen-year-old counterparts. Good story, long, and excellent if you like meaty and plotty.

A Guide to Better Hugging, by Sameshima Shuzumi
A really great character study of Heero and Duo and how they're quietly growing closer together. I like the way Duo just never gives up on Heero and the way Heero eventually gives in (in a good way, mind you). Well-written, intelligent and Duo's internal monologue is both funny and sweet at the same time (much like Duo himself, ne? ^_^).

Porcelain, by Spooks
Yay! This story is finally finished :D. I started reading this a couple of weeks ago, but had to stop because I didn't want to be left hanging with a cliffhanger -_-. "Porcelain" is an exciting, well-written story wherein Heero and Duo deal with a persistent stalker who makes their (and their friends') lives miserable. There's an excellent, slow build-up to the climax and the "whodiddit" and a great many GW characters make an appearance (from our favorite pilots to the lesser-known Sylvia Noventa). The story is written in such a way that it's fun to speculate about the stalker and pretty much everyone looks suspicious in this.

The small side-plots regarding the romantic relationships of the pilots are woven tightly into the story, adding just that little extra to a terrific, engaging story. I simply adore the way the (established) Heero/Duo relationship is written, and "Porcelain" even makes a Wufei/Relena relationship sound plausible. Go read!

Disinhibiting Heero, by Becca Abbott
Zechs is a psychologists who helps Heero work through his problems in his relationship with Duo. This story not only manages to have a solid plot and hot sex, but also gives particular insights in Heero's character. The best thing about it, though (aside from the hot sex scene *g*) is that Heero and Duo's problems aren't instantly resolved after said hot sex, but that they actually have to work to make it work, much like in, y'know, real relationships. Becca Abbott has a wonderful way with words and this story is definitely worth reading.

You Belong To Me, by Amanda 02
I am really not into vampire fics. It's a kink that I just don't get. So imagine my surprise when I started this Heero-as-a-vampire fic and actually enjoyed it. Very much in fact. The plot is simple: see Heero be a vampire. See Duo get bitten. See Duo get dominated in very hot, very steamy sex scenes. See a happy end. Hot sex, well-written and an all-around good read.

Of Men and Fish, by DaMoyre
"When actions speak louder than words." Of Men and Fish has particularly good insight in what makes the Heero/Duo relationship work. I loved the strong-but-silent way Heero was portrayed and I adored Duo in this piece. Lovely story.

Fervor, by Blue Soaring
Errrm, sex. Lots of it. Blatant PWP, but so, so very hot, in the best tradition of PWPs everywhere. Dominant Heero, slightly kinky Duo and spanking (in a sexual way, but if that's not your thing, then... um, don't read it, I'd say *g*).

The Tragedy, by Dev-Aki Basaa
(GWA link) Despite its title, not a tragic story at all. In fact, it's a very funny story (unless you're really attached to Relena, which I'm not). Also, like the warnings say, it's NOT a deathstory. Really, it's not. ^_^

I Wish, by Yunemi
If I had to point to one piece of GW fanfiction that had the perfect Heero-characterization, this would be it. This is, simply put, what Heero is about. Erm... this concludes my shortest rec ever written ^_^. But seriously, this is a very, very good piece of fanfiction. It tore me up, ripped my heart out and got me near tears. Then I had to read it again, because it's one of the finest stories ever written.

Black and Blue, by Vinyl Koneko
This is a short little fic that gave me more insight in Heero's character than several longer, more drawn-out stories I've read. The premise is actually very simple: Duo screws up on a mission, gets hurt and Heero takes care of him. But there's a wealth of really good characterization in this piece, both of Heero and Duo, and that's what makes this fic stand out in a bit of a tired genre.

Just Communication, by Sharon
I never really enjoyed masturbation fic until I entered this fandom. It just wasn't something I liked; I prefered the two guys just playing with each other, not themselves. Imagine my surprise when I found masturbation fic that I actually loved very, very much. "Just Communication" is one of those fics. It features Heero and Duo in their respective Gundams, with Duo overhearing Heero as the other boy relieves some stress. A nice dose of humor (which is very hard to do), some great lines and the whole story is just... really... hot *g*.

Kiss Me Again, by Ashura
Hmm... I love a good description of a kiss. In "Kiss Me Again", Heero is mighty confused after Duo unexpectedly kisses him. This fic features an inexperienced Heero (which I can buy, based on canon, since Dr J doesn't strike me as the type to teach Heero about things that have nothing to do with missions and blowing stuff up) and a Duo I just absolutely adore. Love the way it's written, love the descriptions and overall, a very nice, sweet read.

Bridlewood Manor, by Mitsugi [FF.Net link]
Well, what can I say about this fic? Only that it's one of the best fics I've read -- ever, be it an AU or regular fic -- in any fandom. BW is an AU. It's England, 1901, and Relena Peacecraft is mired in despair and indecision, and she's burdened by the death of her father and brother. Until that one day when she meets a mysterious young man at a garden party, who manages to charm his way into her house and life. Don't let the description fool you -- BW is very much a 1x2 fic. The attention to detail is mind-blowing, the characters all ring true to their canon counterparts (all of them, and since BW has a very large cast, this all the more amazing) and the build-up of the relationships is just... awe-inspiring.

Before you click the link, be aware that BW is long (76 chapters as I'm writing this) and once you start, you won't be able to let it rest. It took me some three weeks to read all chapters, and since it's (according to the author) never-ending, there's lots more good stuff to come. Bridlewood Manor is the kind of story everyone should have read.

We're In Hell, Aren't We?, by Lys Ap Adin
I'm not giving out any spoilers for this story. Just read it and trust me -- it's hysterically funny for such a short fic. Well-written, good characterization and I promise you it'll make you laugh out loud.

Room Service, by Jenn
This story has absolutely no redeeming value. Lemon. No plot whatsoever. Heero and Duo have amazing sex in a hotel. That's basically it, but it's so hot and the characterizations, despite it being plotless, ring true to me. So, you know. Go read.

Il titolo Sconosciuto, by Starrkaat
Relena Finds Out? Heero Finds Out? Everyone Finds Out? Funny little story, wherein both Heero and Relena have something of importance to tell the other, and they both think the other party might be hurt. Except that they're not. Love the way Dorothy's written, gotta love Heero's nervousness and his eventual, blurted confession and the reactions to it. (Story also contains shoujo ai. 1x2, DxR.)

Bound and Captive Heart, by RavynFyre
(GWA link) Um, yeah. Tie Heero up and let him have it, this is *nods*. Bondage warning, for those squicked by that, but dear God this is so unbelievably fucking hot that it nearly sizzles of the screen. It's a lemon, PWP, so I'm not going into the plot (because there isn't once, hence the term "PWP") and it manages to keep the boys in character as well. What else could you possibly want? Oh, a sequel wherein Heero turns the tables? That's there as well, "Captive Heart", in which poor Duo suffers from Heero's (delightful) revenge *eg*.

Five Dates With Duo, by Lady Archer
Fluff! Fluff, fluff, fluff. So fluffy that you won't ever want to read fluff again, but in a very, very good way. The title pretty much says it all: Heero has five dates with Duo, and with each date, they get progressively more involved with each other. It's fluffy and sweet without being saccharine. There's too little date fic in this fandom -- here's hoping the "date fic" challenge at "Moments of Rapture" will change that :).

Being Happy and sequel, by Dev-Aki Basaa
(GWA link) I don't like stories where Heero is married to Relena. I like stories where they're having sex even less >.< And yet... In "Being Happy", Heero is indeed married to Relena, but it's a loveless marriage from his POV -- he only married her because that would make her happy, foregoing his own shot at happiness. All is not well in the Sanc Kingdom and Relena tries to find out exactly why her husband is so cold and distant. "Happy Endings", its sequel, is just as the title suggests ^-^, Heero ending up with the right person. Well-written, smart and engaging -- could be considered drama if you like Relena, but if you don't, it's comedy gold :). (Rx1 implied, but not in the icky way.)

Those Eyes Were Killer, by Meiran Chang
(Rec originally posted to my LiveJournal). This is the kind of story that keeps playing in my head for days after I've read it. It's short, but very satisfactory, and gives us a look into Dr. J's head and certain aspects of the training Heero received and how he grew up into the kid we all know and love. There are some pretty graphical descriptions of torture in the story (my fingers were never the same again afterwards), but it's absolutely necessary for the theme to work. Please don't let the fact that it's gen stop you from reading.

Hitched, by Elendys
Written from the POV of one of Duo's co-workers, this story follows said co-workers as they try to figure out who the beautiful woman is that Duo is going to marry ^_^. I will honestly admit that crossdressing is one of my major squicks, so this story pleasantly surprised me by being entirely unsquicky. It's a wild, fun romp and very well-written. Even if you dislike crossdressing, I urge you to at least give this story a chance; it may surprise you. I know it did me :). (Yes, it is 1x2.)

A Day in the Life of Shinigami, by girlstarfish
Funny little humor fic about a day in the life of Duo Maxwell. Vague shounen ai hints and mayhem abound. Please don't let Duo touch any cooking utensils. (ff.net link, so may be down at random times.)

First Time For Everything, by Hyuy
(GWA link) Neither Heero or Duo is gay... or are they? Duo proposes, Heero refuses, but we all know how it ends anyway. Funny little humor fic, including a Very Bad First Kiss, and some lovely dancing around each other. I like the characterization of both pilots in this sweet little fic.

Afternoon At Duo's by Lorena
(Note: this story is part of a larger series by Lorena focusing on Trowa and Quatre. Click here to read Bildungsroman.) Quatre turns to Heero and Duo for some pointers on gay sex. In this AU, they're at a Catholic school, which, of course, isn't exactly the most jolly place to be if you're gay. Quatre asks questions; the others try to answer them.

And In The Dawn, by Ponderosa
Duo is looking for the perfect girlfriend, but can't seem to find the woman who will be the love of his life. Casual flings aren't working out for him anymore and thus, the search for "The One" commences. A random suggestion from Heero pushes him in the right direction. Excellent characterization, lovely visuals and very well-written. Also, the kissing scenes? Hot.

Blood Red Threads, by Madamhydra
Duo Maxwell is Up To Something, but Quatre and Wufei have a hard time figuring out to what. This is a quiet, introspective, WAFFy little fic with some symbolism, and it presents a gorgeous look into Heero and Duo's relationship. Short but very satisfactory.

Braille Of My Soul and Map Of My World by D.C. Logan
These two companion stories are what I usually call 'quietly beautiful'. They're light and sweet and touching and they make my throat constrict and I find them very, very powerful.

Domestic Bliss Arc, by Flamika
A series of ficlets (which can stand on their own; they're just better when read with the others, so be sure to read them all) in which we follow Heero and Duo in their daily life. The series doesn't start out with an established relationship, but instead allows the relationship between Heero and Duo to slowly morph into something more. Both boys have their demons, but together, they'll manage.

The Education of Heero Yuy by Vermilion Flame
Heero discovers there are some serious gaps in the education given to him by Dr. J, and decides Duo is the one best qualified to teach him. Sexy, hot and satisfying story.

Two Words, by D.C. Logan
The author describes it as "fun, sappy and brainless" which, I guess, is accurate :). It's a sweet little story with a relentlessly pursuing Heero and a not-very-resistant Duo. Plus, hot kissing. What more could you want?

The Games We Play, by Keelywolfe
Relena and Duo have... a conversation. I'm not a fan of Relena-bashing, so I (almost literally) jumped with joy when I read this fic. I love the way Keelywolfe writes Relena, much like in the canon, in which she's decidedly not the psychotic stalker bitch in pink many stories make her out to be. This Relena is intelligent and she knows when to let go. (very faint hints of one-sided R+1).

Held Accountable, by Mikkeneko
Good humor is hard to find, so I was happy to stumble across this little gem. The premise is simple, but original: Heero's been happily transferring money from OZ accounts to his own account, and now it's time for revenge. He and Duo are forced by an extremely cruel woman to document exactly where all the money went and what it was spent on. In triplicate. Hilarious little fic.

How It's Not Supposed To Be, by Ashura
Duo reflects on his relationship with Heero. Quiet little introspective piece, with a wonderful Duo-voice and an endlessly loveable Heero. Yum.

The Little Things, by D.C. Logan
One day, I will figure out why I love little "slices of life" ficlets so much. This series, like Flamika's "Domestic Bliss" arc, consists of several short ficlets about Heero and Duo's life. The only difference is that here, the relationship has been going on for a while. As for me, I like "Shopping List" best; it's a very cute look at how Heero and Duo are very much opposites :).

Making It Better, by Keelywolfe
Set within episode #4, The Victoria Nightmare, when Heero and Duo are oh-so-friendly toward one another after Duo helped Heero escape from the hospital. Kick-ass Duo voice, hot sex and some humor thrown in for good measure. Delightful story.

Moments of Haven arc, by Jei
(Scroll down to the bottom of the page.) Set after the war, this arc follows Heero and Duo as they're trying to build their life together, which isn't an easy thing to do for two ex-terrorists. Great characterization and very well-written. Plus, a good build-up of their (eventual) romantic relationship. Run, don't walk, and go read this.

Newtonmas, by kebzero
Christmas at the Winner residence. Misunderstandings, mistletoe, some insecurity and a very happy ending. Sweet little fic which even gives us a nice look in Heero's background and education.

Set In Stone, by Mitsugi
A mission goes terribly wrong and while Heero lies on the brink of death, Duo struggles to show him the truth of their hearts before it's too late. In the meantime, outside forces make it even harder for the five pilots to get out of their predicament alive. Adventure-type story with strong characterizations, excellent dialogue and a wonderful view of the Heero/Duo relationship.
